In order to truly protect your organisation, your backups should be saved securely offsite. That way in the event of a disaster such as fire or flood, your backups could be restored onto your replacement hardware.

Organisations have a variety of drivers and requirements for recovery in the event of a disaster. The most important aspect is typically the mean time to recovery following a disaster. This mean time is heavily influenced by how long it takes to reunite the backup data with the server and storage hardware. The simplest scenario is to restore the data from tape, directly onto an environment which is the right shape and size as the primary servers and storage. Some DR solutions companies will endeavour to roll up with a van containing a preconfigured set of servers and storage, which that company is contracted to provide. Invariably the specification of the servers does not match the true requirements and there is the time lost in getting all of this equipment set up.
